NYFW Diaries: Standard Talks Helmut Lang

Dear Diary...let's talk about it!

ICYMI, Standard Talks is back, babes. We're thrilled to announce the return of our platform for big conversations. And what better time to reinvigorate Standard Talks than New York Fashion Week? Friday afternoon (into the evening), we were joined by curator Antwaun Sargent, gallerist Hannah Traore and artist Turiya Adkins for a panel discussion about Helmut Lang, moderated by Hannah Gottlieb-Graham, founder of ALMA Communications. The event dovetailed with Sargent's new exhibition at the Hannah Traore Gallery—COWBOY—which examines the 2004 Helmut Lang "COWBOY" tee through multiple lenses.

Standard Talks: The Making of COWBOY delved into themes of expanding consciousness around westward expansion and the Great Migration. Our guests explored narrative expression surrounding the cowboy, and how Black cowboys specifically challenge the traditional stereotype. Everything was fair game: tropes of maculinity, community leadership and imagining spiritual forces. If that sounds like a lot, it was. It was everything, honey.

Guests in attendance included model Ella Emhoff, artists Awol Erizku, Cameron Welch + Devon B. Johnson, playwright Jeremy O'Harris, designer Grace Wales Bonner, stylist Becky Akinyode, photographer Tyler Mitchell, GQ's Sam Hine, and Dinesh Tandon—CEO of Helmut Lang. After the event, guests enjoyed an intimate dinner hosted by Antwaun Sargent and Helmut Lang.

Standard Talks invites the world’s leading thinkers, doers and creators to talk it out at The Standard. They bring their biggest ideas and best takes to intimate panel discussions. Talks cover topics ranging from art and fashion to science, politics and entrepreneurship. Over cocktails (or coffee), guests sit back and absorb, ask questions and make new connections. Stay tuned for more, and peep the pics...
