Style, Alive: Inside the ALT Fashion Gala in Boom

Less velvet rope, more raw talent.

For NYFW, NY DJ Orson and photographer Matt Weinberger were back on duty with their ALT(ernative) fashion gala at Boom. The goal: give young NYC designers with real momentum a space to express and be wild. The designers brought their friends, dressed them up, and suddenly Boom felt brand new: golden, sweaty, unfiltered — it was NYFW, alive.

So what’s the pulse of New York fashion right now? We asked the stylish kids.

What does New York give you?
I grew up on a farm in rural Pennsylvania where everyone tried to blend in. In New York, being your most unique self is the norm. That pushes me further.

What kind of world are you trying to build?
I’m building latex outside of fetishwear. Most latex brands focus on sexual appeal. Lalelei means “beautiful” in Samoan. I want girls to feel beautiful beyond the sexual gaze.

What did you do after the after?
Taco Bell. Black bean Crunchwrap. Nacho fries.

What’s the magic of NYFW?
Individuality. That’s the magic.

Do you believe in sneaking in line (at the club and in your career)?
I don’t just believe in it — it’s my religion.

What kind of world are you trying to build?
One where individuality isn’t niche. And where having fun is mandatory.

What’s the magic of NYFW?
Honestly, the big shows don’t move me. The smaller, scrappier ones do. When there’s a shoestring budget and a tight community making something raw out of almost nothing — that’s inspiring.

Do you believe in sneaking in line (at the club and in your career)?
At the club? Sure. In my career? No shortcuts. Craft matters. I respect self-taught designers, but knowing your technique is everything.

What does New York give you?
Restless energy. Chaos. Inspiration. Excitement.

What’s the magic of NYFW?
It’s like a high school reunion — but with creative baddies instead of the normies we actually went to school with.

Do you believe in sneaking in line (at the club and in your career)?
I believe in being on the guest list.

“I don’t love NYFW. It doesn’t always spotlight the real NYC designers. That’s why this event felt different — it reached the underbelly.” – Liv Reinertson

What actually excites you in fashion right now?
The art is coming back. The kids are making things. There’s a resurgence of craft and care. You can feel momentum building.

What’s the magic of NYFW?
It’s mostly memory now. But it’s still a connector. Something new will grow out of it.

Do you believe in sneaking in line (at the club and in your career)?
No need to sneak. Walk to the front like you belong — then you do. In a career, that confidence comes from endless practice.

What actually excites you in fashion right now?
People building worlds instead of just collections. Small drops. Personal storytelling. Designers who care about community as much as clothes — who actually invest in their values. It feels less about hype, more about connection.

Do you believe in sneaking in line (at the club and in your career)?
If you’re dressed in Emerson Isa, you should be able to sneak in. In your career? Work, work, work. That’s how you earn the front.

What kind of world are you trying to build?
One where fashion feels personal. Where getting dressed connects you to something bigger than a trend cycle.

What actually excites you in fashion right now?
People actually giving a shit about sustainability.

What does New York give you?
Instant gratification. Instant disappointment.

What’s the magic of NYFW?
The week before. That’s when everything actually happens.

Do you believe in sneaking in line (at the club and in your career)?
I 100% believe in faking it till you make it. And yes — that’s exactly what I’m doing.

What actually excites you in fashion right now?
Side-hustle designers. People building something after hours because they have to. I started making dresses while teaching preschool. There’s something powerful about that kind of passion.

What does New York give you?
It’s my only reference point. Lately I’m inspired by old doorways and metalwork — they look like vintage lace. The Financial District architecture actually guides how I construct my dresses.

What’s the magic of NYFW?
I don’t love NYFW. It doesn’t always spotlight the real NYC designers. That’s why this event felt different — it reached the underbelly.

What’s the magic of NYFW?
Anyone can participate. It’s not just the official calendar — people come from everywhere to debut collections. If you wander long enough, you’ll find a world.

Do you believe in sneaking in line (at the club and in your career)?
Absolutely. Dress up. Be kind. Get in there.

What kind of world are you trying to build?
A place where everyone can play — like a bright broken window you climb through into color and delight. Hats can give you anything: a laugh, a hideaway, connection.
