Guiss Guiss Bou Bess Brings Sabar Grooves to Ibiza

Tuesday 26 July, Guiss Guiss Bou Bess brings their signature blend of Senegalese sabar drums with deep electro beats to Jara at The Standard, Ibiza. We caught up with the music-makers to get the download on their sound, influences...and the magic they're bringing to Jara this week.

Tell us a little about yourself.

We are a trio created in 2017, with two Senegalese griots and traditional percussionists with Steph, a French beatmaker. Mara Seck is our singer and dancer, and Aba Diop is another percussionist. Together we create a powerful sound alchemy, mixing traditional Senegalese sabar drums with deep electronic beats. We have explored every style and rhythm to develop the perfect fusion of ritual percussion and bass music. They methodically respect every code of Senegalese traditions, while merging with the global rhythms of trap, dubstep, UK garage, drum and bass, bass house, afrobass and Kuduro.

Describe the Senegalese sound in 3 words

Polyrhythmic, dancing and mystic!

What can people expect when they come to see you perform live at The Standard, Ibiza?

Our live show is pure, high-octane energy that ignites the audience. In Senegal, there is no separation between music and dance. They are both called "sabar" and considered parts of the same experience. In keeping with that tradition, each Guiss Guiss Bou Bess show mixes music and dance. It is a real journey in between tradition and modernity...Senegalese and the universal scene.
