This September 2026, we are handing over our pristine walls at The Standard, Hua Hin to our newest Artist in Residence,
Ka_dob.
She calls herself an artist-explorer, and it is easy to see why. Her work plays with the tension between the untamed natural world and delicate, refined details. We sat down with her to talk about breaking boundaries, finding beauty in imperfections and what happens when you let your inner light shine through.
You describe yourself as an "artist-explorer." What does that mean for your creative process?
Ka_dob: I don’t begin with theory. I start with research, exploring materials firsthand to understand how they work.
What is the main source of inspiration behind your work?
Ka_dob: My main inspiration is a person fully immersed in nature, existing as a true part of it. Nature awakens a bright, natural light inside me. When I come into contact with plants, I remember that everything can be simple and spontaneous. Nature has no boundaries and no ideals. It is beautiful precisely because of its imperfections.
Your pieces always seem to strike a perfect balance. How do you bring those contrasting elements together?
Ka_dob: In my work, I combine natural, freestyle forms and asymmetries with very delicate decorative details. It is all about creating a contrast between the wild and the refined.
You find beauty in nature's imperfections. Is it a challenge to preserve that rawness when adding very delicate decorative details to your work?
Ka_dob: It is always a delicate dance. The refined details are meant to highlight the natural, freestyle forms and asymmetries, not overpower them. I have to intentionally stop myself from polishing a piece too much, leaving enough of the wild intact so it retains its heartbeat.
How does that internal light translate into a physical installation?
Ka_dob: That light illuminates me from within and it penetrates into the outside world. I want it to illuminate the people who surround me.
Tell us about the installation you are creating for The Standard, Hua Hin this September.
Ka_dob: The piece works exactly like that inner illumination. It features an internal lamp that triggers a play of light. This light filters through colored glass, creating vibrant, spontaneous patterns on the adjacent white walls. It is an invitation to step inside and experience the glow.
What do you hope guests at The Standard, Hua Hin take away from your residency this September?
Ka_dob: I hope the play of light from the internal lamp sparks their own inner illumination. If walking through the installation helps someone remember that everything can be simple and spontaneous, then the piece has done exactly what it was meant to do.
