The Culture Club with ArtReview

In Conversation with Larry Achiampong + Danielle Braithwaite-Shirley

Tuesday 31 August
7pm

Produced by ArtReview, one of the world’s leading art magazines, and The Standard, London, one of London’s central gathering points for the city’s creatives, The Culture Club hosts a series of intimate talks designed to introduce its audiences to some of the most innovative voices shaping and reshaping the local and global art and culture scenes. Featuring a diverse range of speakers, representing the broadest range of arts practices, they collectively form a guide to the key issues of our times and how we, as individuals and as a collective society, identify and respond to them. And provide the spark for conversations that will continue through The Standard’s social spaces and beyond.

The inaugural discussion will feature artists Larry Achiampong and Danielle Braithwaite-Shirley and focuses on the key question ‘What can art do?’ and will look at the potential of art not only to represent or reflect the world but to reimagine and change it too. Through an overview of their respective practices and the ways in which they investigate and remix past, present and future, the conversation will explore art's potential to explore and confront brave new worlds.

British Ghanaian artist Larry Achiampong uses his art to explore narratives of Pan-African histories and futures alongside postcolonial themes and posthuman existence. Alongside works involving performance, filmmaking, animation and sculpture, Achiampong is consulting on the redevelopment of Smithfields Market, a stone’s throw away from The Standard, London’s St Pancras location.

Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley is an animator and artist who creates work centred around the history and present reality of the Black trans experience, tackling the process issues of self and imposed identities and ways of broadening the experience of the world.
