The Decimo team are back from an inspiring R&D trip to Mexico City—days spent exploring the stories, flavours, and traditions that define indigenous Mexican cooking. From early market mornings to late-night kitchens, the trip was a deep dive into a culinary culture that continues to evolve while holding steadfast to its roots.
La Mesa is an ongoing dining series from The Standard, London, bringing together chefs and creatives from around the world for one-off collaborations that celebrate culture, connection, and the stories told through food. Each edition transforms Decimo into a space for shared tables, generous cooking, and exchange between chefs, guests, and ideas.
One of the most memorable experiences of the Mexico City trip came from a meal at Nicos, a family-run restaurant that has been at the heart of Mexico’s dining landscape for over sixty years. Founded in 1957 and now led by Chef Gerardo Vázquez Lugo, Nicos is celebrated for its commitment to preserving and elevating traditional Mexican cuisine. Chef Gerardo’s approach is both scholarly and soulful—honouring regional ingredients, championing small producers, and keeping Mexico’s rich gastronomic history alive through every plate.
We are honoured to announce that Chef Gerardo and the Nicos team will join us at The Standard, London for the next edition of La Mesa on 4th November. 1800 Tequila will curate the cocktails for the evening, a mix of Decimo favourites and one off specials for the evening.
To celebrate Día de los Muertos, the evening will be an homage to heritage and memory—a reflection on how food connects us to those who came before. The Nicos team will be bringing ingredients and inspiration directly from Mexico City, creating a menu that tells the story of their kitchen and the communities behind it.
