To Do

Brace Yourself! It's Armory Arts Week

ADAA ART SHOW
What: The Art Show is the nation's longest-running fine art fair, known for its one-person presentations of contemporary heavyweights.
Eyes Peeled: Marvel at those ticket prices. A fun place to play the "If I Had a Billion Dollars" game.
When and Where:
March 5 – 9
Park Avenue Armory
643 Park Ave.
New York, NY 10065
Tickets are $25 and benefit the Henry Street Settlement.

ARMORY SHOW, THE
What: Frieze and the edgier Independent might be elbowing in on its turf, but this is still the main event. Always worth a trip.
Eyes Peeled: This year, the Armory's organizers have promised greater focus and commitment to well-curated booths, both solo and thematic, which, one hopes, will make for a slightly more digestible experience. Word on the street so far? "The Armory's back!" Check out "The Armory Presents" for an in-depth look at newly established galleries. And remember: Modern art lives at Pier 92, contemporary at 94.
When & Where:
March 6-9
Piers 92 & 94
Twelfth Ave. at 55th Street
New York, NY
Tickets are $40.

ARTBOOK BOOKSTORE POP-UP
What: It's just not an art fair without ArtBook, the art world's most fabulous publisher. They're setting up shop across from the ticket counter at Pier 94.
Eyes Peeled: Highlights include Show Time: The 50 Most Influential Exhibitions of Contemporary Art, and some new Toilet Paper editions.

BRUCENNIAL
What: This could also be filed under "L" for last hurrah. What started in 2008 (in the space of a former weed growing operation, on the edge of Bushwick and Bed-Stuy, under the JMZ) with a couple of artist friends has turned into a high-concept celebration powered by the young gallerist Vito Schnabel.
Eyes Peeled: "The Bruces" have decided to focus their future efforts on education so this will be the very last Brucennial. It's supposed to be a woman artist-only show, but we shall see.
When & Where:
March 7 - April 4
837 Washington Street (just across the street from The Standard, High Line)
New York, NY 10014

INDEPENDENT
What: Less an art fair, more an "exhibition forum," Independent tries to bridge the gap between commercial and curatorial. Some of the most interesting international galleries, publishers, and non-profit institutions will be on hand, including Gavin Brown’s enterprise (New York), Herald Street (London), and Peres Projects (Berlin). Its open floor plan at the DIA is a nice break from all those endless booth-lined corridors.
When & Where:
March 6 - 9
548 West 22nd St.
New York, NY 10011
Tickets are $20.

MOVING IMAGE:
What: Moving Image is sort of mini-fair / exhibition featuring 35 video artists, including Vincent Broquaire, Nicole Cohen, and Oded Hirsch. You know we love video art (see our elevators or Lobbies or guest room TVs), so expect to see us there.
When & Where:
March 6 - 9
Waterfront New York Tunnel
269 11th Ave.
New York, NY 10011
Admission is free.

SCOPE
What: Scope is all about the international emerging art scene. Known for its multi-disciplinary creative programming (and some rather mixed reviews), you never know what you might discover.
When & Where:
March 7 - 9
312 West 33rd St.
New York, NY 10001
Tickets are $25.

SPRING/BREAK
What: Now in its third year, The Spring/Break art show is "a break or reprieve from some of the typical fairs,” founder Andrew Gori explained to ArtFCity. Held in a defunct elementary school in SoHo, the show cuts out art dealers, for the most part, in favor of a community-oriented, curator-driven exhibition of emerging artists.
Eyes Peeled: This year's show, "PUBLICPRIVATE," focuses on the visibility of self in our everyday lives, the mass marketing of the photo op, and culture's cozy relationship with surveillance. You'll have to look beyond the brass beds hanging from the ceiling, but you can find conceptual gems in the rough.
Where & When:
March 6 - 9
Old School
233 Mott Street
New York, NY 10012
Tickets are $5.

VOLTA NY
VOLTA NY is a Downtown solo-artist fair and survey of "emerging contemporary art positions." It's a good one to visit if you're looking for more affordable pieces.
When & Where:
March 6 - 9
82 Mercer St.
New York, NY 10012
Tickets are $15

WHITNEY BIENNIAL, THE
The 2014 Whitney Biennial, will be the last biennial to take place at the Marcel Breuer building before the Whitney becomes The Standard, High Line's next-door neighbor. Three outside curators were brought in for this year's show, so don't expect to find an overarching theme, as in past years, aside from the fact that there isn't one.
When & Where:
March 7 - May 25
Whitney Museum of American Art
945 Madison Ave.
Manhattan, NY 10021
Tickets are $20.
