Q&A

Chloé Farrah’s Taking Modern Circus to the Next Level

Chloé Farah is a choreographer, acrobatic designer and coach who created the show About Us and Time—dazzling audiences in Hua Hin. The Standard, Hua Hin partnered on her engagement at the Vic Hua Hin Theater, where acrobatic artists brought her artistry to life. We sat down with Chloé to talk inspiration, music and her big plans to grow the circus arts in Thailand. Here’s what the artist had to say…

Tell us a little about About Us and Time. How did you choose the title?

I wrote the show about Time, and the relationship with it, and very simply, our producer khun Mam asked, “So our show speaks it's about us and time?” and that's how we kept the title!

How did you get into the world of modern circus?

I myself was a circus artist in contemporary circus companies, i.e. without animals and whose artistic proposition was to tell a story and not to perform one act after another interspersed with an MC or a Mister Loyal, as is done in the traditional circus.

So, I've been immersed in the “modern” circus for over 20 years.

Over the years, are there particular performance moments that stick with you?

Yes: The day I saw my first Cirque du Soleil show: Saltimbanco, my life changed!

Tell us about your choreography process. How did this performance come together?

To be honest, it's a mystery even to me! The ideas flow and pile up in my head and then almost immediately organize themselves, until I see the show unfolding in my head as clearly as when I'm watching a film. That's when I know I've got a show! I'd like to thank everyone who writes and performs songs, because music is my biggest source of inspiration.

Who are some artists and healers inspiring you at the moment?

Artists are my daily life, my normality, so I can't say that I draw my inspiration from them. On the other hand, what inspires me is "beauty", first of all Mother Nature, which is obviously incomparable, and then human beings: through their qualities such as kindness, empathy, honesty and authenticity; that inspires me!

What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?

I am also an osteopath!

What’s on your agenda this summer in Hua Hin?

Mainly this show, and my future plans to grow the circus arts in Thailand.

What songs do you dance to alone in your room?

Definitely. “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” from the incredible Nina Simone.
