TheirStories is back in The Library Lounge for 2024! Exploring intergenerational LGBTQ+ stories at The Standard, London. Opening the SS/2024 season, on the eve of BFI Flare: London LGBTIQA+ Film Festival’s opening gala, is a very special in conversation between two of the UK’s most exciting queer writers, directors & filmmakers - Amrou Al-Kadhi & Matthew Jacobs Morgan.
Amrou Al-Kadhi is an internationally renowned drag queen, screenwriter / director and author. Their sell-out solo drag show, GLAMROU, has toured internationally. Their first book, LIFE AS A UNICORN, was published with Harper Collins around the world, and won the Somerset Maugham awards and Polari Prize. Their debut feature film, LAYLA, was made with Film4 and the BFI, world premiered this year at the Sundance Film Festival, and will have it’s European premiere on the opening gala night of BFI Flare Film Festival.
Interviewing Amrou will be writer-director Matthew Jacobs Morgan, one of London’s most in-demand talents, who has worked with HBO, BBC, Amazon Studios & Film4, and will lead an in-depth discussion on Amrou’s diverse & wide-ranging career, from the underground drag bars of London to the international film stage, as well as the highs & lows of creating queer stories on film. We are thrilled that Amrou will be joining us on the eve of their LAYLA European premiere, for a rich evening of conversation & connection.

TheirStories is an intergenerational LGBTQ+ platform & event series, created to investigate, celebrate and uplift the diverse narratives and stories of the UK’s vibrant LGBTQ+ community, with talks, performances, cultural moments and music. Curated by Laurie Belgrave, founder of The Chateau, and currently resident at The Standard, London, these nourishing conversations between generations of queer creatives, artists & humxns provide a much-needed space for learning, reflection and connection, for both the queer community and allies looking to educate themselves on queer issues. TheirStories values and celebrates our history, contextualising our existence with the stories of the queer people who came before us.
