Speak Up Pop-Up with ACLU

Marking a moment in which fashion and art come together to promote awareness of the need to protect our civil liberties, the ACLU and The Standard have joined forces and enlisted the help of top designers and artists to create a pop-up retail store within The Standard Spa, Miami Beach.  Featuring limited-edition t-shirts, sweatshirts, tote bags, pins, and more, the goal of the initiative is to further awareness and mobilization around our rights and freedoms, with a focus on protecting the “Dreamers” – young immigrants at risk of deportation from the only country they know as home.

Artists and designers were asked to create designs inspired by the ACLU’s new tagline, ‘We the People,’ or a similar sentiment that resonated for them personally.

“Arts and fashion have once again stepped up and shown a deep commitment to civil liberties,” said Anthony D. Romero, ACLU’s executive director. “As we saw in our awareness project during New York Fashion Week, their collective and individual voices are exactly what’s needed at this unprecedented time in our history.”

Items by top designers such as Prabal Gurung, Public School, Everlane, and Opening Ceremony, as well as posters and pins imagined by artists including The Haas Brothers, Mickelane Thomas, Shelter Serra, Daniel Arsham, Amanda Charcian, and Shepard Fairey, will be on display and available for purchase at The Standard Spa, Miami Beach from December 7-10th, and available nationwide following Miami Art Week on www.ShopTheStandard.com.

"It is an honor to partner with the ACLU once again,” said Humberto Leon, Creative Director of Opening Ceremony. “Their mission is one of inclusivity, which Opening Ceremony wholly supports.  We're really excited about this design that was inspired by ACLU's powerful tagline, because it's an important reminder and a call to action that everyone must do their part to protect the rights and liberties guaranteed by our Constitution.  We all have to come together and dare to create a more perfect union."

“Humor, sensitivity and humility will bring love and unity. That’s what the images on these shirts are all about,” said Nikolai and Simon Haas, whose ‘We the People’ design features their signature joyful and fantastical animated creatures. “We’re so honored to have the opportunity to give that message with the ACLU.”

All proceeds from the project will benefit the ACLU, with products ranging from $50 to $85.

The ACLU’s Blue Ribbon – a symbol of standing up for the rights and freedoms enshrined in the U.S. Constitution – will be distributed throughout Miami Art Week fairs and events.

Visitors to the ‘Speak Up’ pop-up store will also have the opportunity to take an online action in support of the bipartisan Dream Act, which would protect an entire generation of immigrants at risk of losing their jobs and being deported.

#StandWithACLU and #DaretoCreate can be used when posting to social media.

Please note: The pop-up is public so come one, come all! No need to RSVP.
