The Standard Guide to Dog Days in Downtown LA

As lovers of all things art and dogs, we passed out when we heard about dOGUMENTA, an art show for dogs happening in Downtown LA Sept 14-16 and 21-23. Once we came to, we knew we had to get involved. For the month of September, The Standard, Downtown LA is offering priority access to the show, in-room dog beds, treats, and puppy swag bags, when you book your stay with the code FURBABY. (And remember: dogs always stay for free at The Standard.)

During your stay, there’s plenty to do in the neighborhood with your pup in tow. The resident experts on DTLA's dog-friendly hangout spots, Michelle and Watson of Watson & Walls, share their favorite places to eat, drink (both coffee and alcohol), and play around our Downtown LA digs.

Where to Eat

PYT
A delightful, pup-friendly option, with a vegetarian menu that rotates seasonally. Every dish is better than the last.
Baco Mercat
For a solid, trendy option right in the heart of Downtown LA, go to Baco Mercat, which is from the same group behind PYT. The tapas-style eatery has a patio that’s ideal for happy hour.

 Zinc Café & Market

No trip to Downtown LA is complete without a visit to the Arts District, and the #1 dog-friendly eatery there is Zinc. Order to-go at the counter or get seated for full table service. Also check out a few murals right around the corner.

Faith & Flower

For when you and your pup want to dress up a little, Faith & Flower’s dog-friendly patio is our go-to. Don’t miss the peach and burrata pizza.

Where to Drink Adult Human Beverages

The Resident
This laid-back, outdoor beer garden and bar is a must-stop in the Arts District area. One word: frosé (and enormous cacti out front. OK, that’s six words).
Angel City Brewery
While you’re in the Arts District, you might as well mosey over to Angel City Brewery for some beers. This is our favorite dog-friendly spot in LA, and dogs are allowed everywhere inside and out. The gigantic space buzzes on the weekends, and they have games like cornhole and jenga to keep you there all day. And down the street, take a pic of your dog in front of Collette Miller's famous mural of wings.
Prank Bar
Roll up with your pup to "LA's first walk-up bar," which has a looong happy hour lasting from 2:30 to 7pm. Locals know it as a go-to, solid option in the area, and your pup will be doted upon.

Where to Drink Coffee

Giorgi Porgi
We’re suckers for a good cup of coffee, and Giorgi Porgi takes the cake. It’s a little hard to find, but once inside you and your pup will be wowed by the indoor moss archway and minimalist bar.
Stumptown
This Portland coffee company has become a hit destination for Angelenos. The Arts District location lets you bring your dog inside, and it has a great outdoor area, too. Great vibes, great beans.
Philz Coffee
The most popular coffee shop in SF finally made its way down to SoCal, and we’re so happy it did. Bring your pooch and sit at their tables outside for a quirky pick-me-up, like a mint mojito latte.

Where to Play

+ Go on a mural hunt. On the google map below, we marked all the best murals in Downtown LA in magenta.

Healthy Spot or Pussy & Pooch, aka the Apple Stores of dog accessories, and they have grooming services, too.

+ Hang out at One Santa Fe. There are a ton of shops, restaurants, and coffee shops in a concentrated area, plus some gorgeous murals.

+ Go run around Maguire Gardens' dog park, only a two-minute walk from The Standard, Downtown LA.
