TheirStories: Jeffrey Hinton in conversation with Jeanie Crystal

This month The Standard, London debuts a new series of events celebrating London’s thriving LGBTIQA+ community, curated by Laurie Belgrave, founder of The Chateau. To launch the series, we present TheirStories: an evening of rich cultural discussion, music, film and knowledge exchange between generations of artists. Exploring London’s queer cultural history, through the eyes of those who lived it.

For the first edition of TheirStories we welcome DJ, filmmaker and artist Jeffrey Hinton to the Library Lounge. From late 1970s New York, to literally every gay club in 1980s & 90s London, Jeffrey has been a key figure in queer nightlife culture throughout the last 4 decades. As a DJ, but also as a filmmaker and archivist, ensuring that these crucial spaces and characters of queer history are recorded and documented. 

Jeffrey will be creating a special bespoke film for the event, diving into his rarely seen archive of club and performance footage from the last 40 years, providing a unique window into London’s hidden underground culture. The film will be screened in the Library Lounge throughout the night.

Interviewing Jeffrey will be Jeanie Crystal, DJ and Founder of audio-visual collective Faboo TV, and LGBTQ+ strip club Harpies. 

After the talk, Jeffrey and Jeanie will DJ b2b in The Library Lounge until late!

Jeffrey Hinton is an artist, DJ and filmmaker based in London, UK. He has worked in some of the world’s most well-known clubs, including Leigh Bowery’s Taboo (where he was resident DJ). In 1986, he worked with Charles Atlas and Michael Clark on the film Hail the New Puritan. His music and scratch films have accompanied fashion shows by BodyMap, Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton and Meadham Kirchhoff. His installations and screenings have appeared at The Victoria & Albert Museum, Hayward Gallery and BFI. He is currently developing a series for TV with Hercules and the Love Affair’s Andy Butler.
