Everyone’s gone green. At The Standard, Hua Hin, we decided to whisk things up with NORM Artisanal Tea Project.
Thailand is deep in its matcha era. Cafés are greener, feeds are greener, and even lifelong coffee drinkers are suddenly discussing origin, umami and the correct way to hold a chasen.
Everyone, it seems, has become a matcha person.
Some like it pure and grassy. Others prefer it poured over milk or layered into something sweet. But behind every photogenic cup is a drink shaped by tradition, precision and technique.
So, naturally, we wanted to learn more.
Finding Our Perfect Match(a)
Recently, The Standard, Hua Hin teamed up with NORM Artisanal Tea Project for So Matcha To Learn, a hands-on workshop dedicated to all things bright, green and beautifully whisked. Guests were introduced to matcha, its flavour, character and essential tools, before learning how to prepare their own bowl of Usucha. They measured, sifted, poured and whisked, aiming for a smooth texture and delicate layer of foam. It sounds simple. It is not.
There is a rhythm to the wrist and a moment when the matcha suddenly comes together. Once it does, the satisfaction is immediate.
Pure, Creamy and Everything Between
The workshop continued with a tasting flight featuring pure matcha drinks and creamy latte variations. Tasting them side by side revealed just how much personality matcha can have. One cup might be fresh and vegetal, while another feels mellow, nutty or softly sweet. It also raised an important question: are you a purist, a latte loyalist or happily somewhere in the middle?
By the end of the sessions, the room was filled with empty cups, newly confident whiskers and plenty of opinions about the perfect matcha ratio.
More Than a Trend
Matcha may be having a major moment, but its appeal goes beyond viral drinks and endless shades of green. There is something satisfying about the ritual. Preparing matcha asks you to slow down, focus and give your full attention to one cup. That spirit made So Matcha To Learn feel right at home in Hua Hin. Relaxed, social and just educational enough, it brought guests together to learn, taste and reconsider their usual caffeine order.
