Artist in Residence
AIKO was born in Tokyo and currently resides in New York since the late 90s. Floral designs, girl cartoons and street pop culture images are all incorporated on her mixed media works. She utilizes both stencil, spraypaint and silkscreen techniques to create her vibrant large-scale works which often transform "cupcake" images to playfully portray feminine sexuality and beauty. Being an immigrant from Japan, AIKO has herself been discovering Americana-type pop imagery and recreating it in an innovative way. She has recently shown her works at the Brooklyn Museum in New York, MACRO Future in Rome, the Deitch Project in Miami, Shanghai MoCA in China, as well as other major galleries and museums throughout the US, Europe and Asia.

The Purple Lounge
Hidden in the the recesses of the 24/7 Restaurant's back hallway, the Purple Lounge is one of the Sunset Strip's better kept secrets. Travelers and LA insouciants sip post-martini classics like Pimm's Cups and Canton Slings, relected in the mirrored walls under the reinvented disco ball. Imagine Wong Kar-Wai and Gene Roddenberry did Glamorama: fuchsia and ruby stained faces and layered amaranthine walls, thirsty friends splayed across diaphonous swings and a garrisoned DJ's refined disco and dance throbbing through the surround.
Every last Wednesday of the month we've teamed up with The Nick Rosen Quartet and Foam Magazine to bring you The Score, Surf Movies in B Minor- an evening of surf cinema and improvisational surf rock. Join us as we wing through some of the most classic works of beachnik generation, sip themed cocktails and meditate on some of the great existential questions posed by Bruce Brown, Wingnut and Turtle Philbin.
On Saturday nights, we bring you Night Fever, a Disco infused event hosted by BBE and Finger POP. WE'R ALL FREAKS are our resident DJs playing House, Indie and Electro and Disco with regular guests from LA and beyond showing up for support. Look out for the Acid Girls on July 31st, ninetyniNe and ALFA on august 7th, Hot Mouth on August 14th, ROBOT LOVE on August 21st and GODDOLLARS on August 28th.
open daily from 10 PM to 2 AM
Piero Golia
Piero Golia's long awaited Luminous Sphere On Top Of The Standard Hotel has arrived and is a temporary intervention in the public domain as part of L.A.P.D (Los Angeles Public Domain), LA><ART's Public Art Initiatives with support ForYourArt, which produces artistic and curatorial interventions in experimental contexts.
To launch LA><ART's five-year anniversary, international artist Golia has installed his first public project in Los Angeles, a site specific sculpture. It's on our roof...see image to left...for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic to view. The piece will be up for one year and the light will go on when he is in LA and go off when he is out of town.
Responding to Los Angeles' cultural climate, LA><ART questions given contexts for the exhibition of contemporary art, architecture and design. With a renewed vision for the potential of independent art spaces, LA><ART provides a center for interdisciplinary discussion and interaction and for the production and exhibition of new exploratory work.

24/7 Projection featuring Kate Gilmore
Kate Gilmore is sole protagonist in her performative videos as she attempts to conquer self-constructed obstacles. Her videos explore issues of displacement, struggle and female identity with metamorphic depth and formal sophistication. Gilmore's tragicomic displays posit physical situations as metaphor for present-day conflicts and social obstacles. -Margot Norton

JULY
The Box featuring Noah Butkus
There is an intangible feeling of nostalgia in so much of Noah Butkus' work. It's a quality that's vividly displayed in his illustrations and whimsical paintings, but nearly impossible to explain, and his illustrations often delve into darker, even stranger territory. A child of the 1970's, and a self-taught artist, Butkus cites comic books as a key influence on and inspiration for his work.
Noah's install will stay up for another couple of weeks in our Lobby and additional new works may be found at HVW8 Art and Design Gallery

JUNE 1ST
Artillery Magazine Book Reading and Signing
Artillery Magazine presents a book signing and reading by writer, John Tottenham. After graduating from London's worst art school in the mid-80s, he moved to the United States, where he has resided ever since, mostly toiling upon the lower slopes of journalism. After many years of resistance, he finally sold out to the lucrative, fast-paced world of poetry. Tottenham's book, The Inertia Variations, is an epic and ever-expanding poetic cycle on the subject of work-avoidance, indolence and failure. The 2010 edition- hailed as a work of "quiescent genius" by Mojo magazine and "comedy gold" by 3AM magazine- contains twice as much material as the original. A multi-media interpretation of this work is currently being produced by musician Matt Johnson, otherwise known as The The.

The Box featuring Charles Munka
Angry faces, pop references and ancient symbols connect under the colorful wiring board of each mind map. As each piece seems to encourage a different freedom of association, the patterns of symbols throughout the series reinforce each other into an immediate and colorful experience of the whole.
Stop in our Lobby to see Munka's current installation and HVW8 gallery this weekend to check out his first LA show

MARCH 30TH
painT
On the evening of the birthday of artist Vincent van Gogh, Gregory Siff invites you to take revenge on Hollywood with painT...a celebration of the life of an artist. Introducing new artworks and photography by Ingrid Mellor never before seen and inspired by the upcoming feature film painT. What if Vincent van Gogh was born today? painT tells the story of Vinny, a struggling artist and quintessential "art underdog" who sees the world as a living, breathing painting. Set against the backdrop of the New York and LA art scene, painT is an american update on the tragic life of van Gogh, seen through the eyes of his modern day counterpart and spiritual heir, examining the fine line between love, madness and paint.
Proceeds from art sold to benefit J.U.I.C.E: Justice by Uniting in Creative Energy, a project of Community Partners, is a non-profit weekly hip hop arts program that seeks to develop youth leadership and technical skills, creative expression and self-confidence through the artistic elements of hip hop which include breakdancing, urban art, deejaying, emceeing/spoken word and music recording.
7 to 10 PM in the Lobby
24/7 Projection featuring Mika Rottenberg
The question of labor and the exploitations of women's bodies lie at the heart of Rottenberg's humorous video installations. In Mary's Cherries, three female wrestlers perform a series of bodily actions in small claustrophobic chambers on successive floors. Two women rapidly pedal exercise bikes to power a UV light that promotes the growth of red fingernails. Each nail is carefully cut and dropped through a hole in the floor where another laborer massages and rubs it, softening it so that when the fingernail is passed to the next laborer it is easily transformed into a sticky maraschino cherry.

Migration
In Doug Aitken's Migration, the movements of wild North American migratory animals are transposed upon the ubiquitous space of modern roadside hotels and motels. As the wild birds and animals inhabit these mysteriously vacant and sterile interiors we're taken on a haunting odyssey through the contemporary American landscape...
The Standard supports and invites you to attend this LA><ART Public Art Initiative with ForYourArt at Regen Projects. The event will feature live improvisational music by Lucky Dragon, White Rainbow, Steve Roden, The Urxed and Nudge.
