LOS ANGELES

Robert Mapplethorpe's XYZ Portfolio is exhibit A in the transformation of photography from a craft into a respected art form over the past 30 years. Rarely seen in its entirety, it gave birth to a new era of art and equality and remains just as bracing today as it was back then.

In addition to the photos, check out the projection that was shown on the exterior wall of the Corcoran Gallery in June 1989 to protest its shuttering of the Mapplethorpe retrospective, The Perfect Moment.
